Drax Project is a New Zealand band that formed in 2014. Recording a mix of jazz, R&B and pop music, the band came to prominence in 2017 with the single “Woke Up Late”, which was certified triple platinum by RIANZ while the 2019 version featuring Hailee Steinfeld was certified triple platinum in Australia.
The song was originally written in English by (Drax Project) and then translated/interpreted into Te Reo Māori by Sir Timoti Kāretu and Hinewehi Mohi. We worked on it with them from there; massaging the syllables to where they felt good. We thought the song took on a different feel in Māori, it became more lyrical, expressive and more beautiful than it was before.
The literal translations don’t really give the same feeling as the lyrics in Māori but it gives you an idea of what the song is about.
It’s about the moment you realise that you only need one thing in your life, and that’s one person who makes your heart skip a beat/your heart pound/gives you the feels/takes your breath away – and that’s the only thing that really matters. All the material stuff doesn’t matter.
The chorus talks about asking/suggesting that we both realise we like each other so much, and in a loving way, suggests “we could go a little faster, if you think it’s going to last”.
Right at the end of the chorus, when it was written in English it was “I don’t want to take it slow”. We loved how the translation into Māori made it almost a rhetorical question – “Kia āta haere, kāore” which means “Take it slow? Nah!”. We just love that!
The bird noises you hear throughout the song are actually played by Jerome Kavanagh (Poutama) on a Karanga Manu, which is a stone with a hole in in from a river in New Zealand. He also plays the Kōauau on the song that makes a beautiful soaring sound which is a flute made from bone.
