Euro 2021 looks set to be held in one country because of the COVID-19 crisis and Russia could host the tournament. It would no longer be in 12 countries.
UEFA were forced to postponed Euro 2020 by 12 months because of COVID-19. The European organisation delayed the hosting of the tournament until summer 2021, but kept the idea of 12 countries hosting it.
Now, due to the coronavirus crisis, UEFA are thinking of hosting it all in just one country. As ‘Le Parisien’ says, UEFA are weighing up several options in case the 12 country idea has to be scrapped.
Ceferin’s preferred choice is Russia. They have volunteered to host it between 11th June and 11th July, the original dates.
“We are always concerned about the situation, but we are absolutely sure that Euro 2021 is going to be held. I have to say that we could hold a Euros in 11, 5 or just one country instead of 12,” the UEFA president recently told Spanish TV channel ‘Vamos’.
UEFA have decided to make this decision to avoid COVID-19 risks. That also allows them to remove the hosting rights from Azerbaijan, which has been banned from holding UEFA matches, without too much controversy.
