Harry Maguire’s Court Trial Postponement Request Was Rejected As Manchester United Star’s Hearing Commences.
Maguire’s lawyer Alexis Anagnostakis claimed that he only received the case file two hours before the trial but the court rejected that he should be allowed more time
Harry Maguire has had for his request for his court case in Greece to be postponed rejected by officials.
Lawyers arrived to the courtroom on Tuesday morning to hear the case, where the Manchester United defender is accused of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery.
But Maguire’s lawyer Alexis Anagnostakis claimed in court that the list of charges was only recently finalised and the legal team had only received the copy of the file two hours before the trial began.
Mr Anagnostakis said he didn’t have the time to discuss the case with Maguire.
He also says that he has a video of all three defendants on the night of the alleged incident in which they are all seen in a state of “extreme agony”, which he needed to examine.
But the court threw out the request – and the case takes place as planned on Tuesday.
Maguire flew back to the UK over the weekend and is not required in court for the case.
However, his dad Alan and his brother Laurence are present.
It is not believed that any of the three men facing charges are at the courtroom on the island of Syros.
Maguire, his brother Joe and their friend Christopher Sharman are the defendants in the case.
Greek court documents show that as well as facing allegations of assaulting a police officer, England defender Maguire is also facing allegations of attempted bribery.
His brother is also facing both charges, and Mr Sharman is just looking at a charge of assault.
All three men pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In addition, Maguire is set to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s first England squad of the season after he was arrested during his holiday.
Maguire had become a key part of Southgate’s squad during his time with Leicester, and his leadership role at United is likely to have furthered his position in the international squad.
The case continues.
