Glenn Close has revealed she thinks Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t deserve to win her Oscar.
Paltrow took home the Best Actress trophy at the 1999 ceremony for her role in Shakespeare in Love.
It’s considered one of the biggest surprises in Oscar history as many had predicted Cate Blanchett would win for Elizabeth.
However, Close was backing someone else altogether:
Fernanda Montenegro for her role in Central Station, Walter Salles’s drama about a young boy’s friendship with a jaded middle-aged woman.
Close was talking about the importance of awards ceremonies in a new interview with ABC News when she made it clear she believes Paltrow shouldn’t have won.
“I remember the year that Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in Central Station, and I thought, ‘What?’” Close said.
She added: “It’s like… you know… it doesn’t make sense.”
Close is one of the favourites to win an Oscar in 2021 for her supporting role in Ron Howard’s Netflix drama Hillbilly Elegy.
She has a total of seven nominations to her name, the first of which she received in 1983 for The World According to Garp.
Close’s most recent nomination came in 2019 for The Wife, but she was beaten by The Favourite star Olivia Colman.
Hillbilly Elegy is on Netflix now.
