Tommy Devito Has Died Aged 92 After Contracting Covid-19

DeVito, who was born in Belleville, New Jersey, died on Monday in Las Vegas after being admitted to hospital with coronavirus.

His death was confirmed by two other founding members of the group, Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio, who said he “would be missed by all who loved him”.

DeVito and Valli began performing together in a group called the Four Lovers in 1956. In 1960 they joined with Gaudio and Nick Massi to become The Four Season.

Some of their biggest hits include O What a Night, Sherry, Walk Like a Man and Big Girls Don’t Cry.

The Four Seasons went on to become one of the most successful ‘doo-wop’ bands in the 1960s, despite a brief and unsuccessful attempt at psychedelic pop.

DeVito, who played lead guitar, quit the band in 1970 telling their fans that he was tired of touring.

Writing on Twitter Valli said: “It is with great sadness that we report that Tommy DeVito, a founding member of The Four Seasons, has passed.

“We send our love to his family during this most difficult time.   He will be missed by all who loved him.”

In 1990 Tommy along with other members of the iconic group were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The hugely successful Broadway and Westend musical Jersey Boys dramatizes the formation, success and eventual break-up of the much-loved group.
