Coronavirus has infected tens of thousands of people, and killed more than 3,000, both in and outside of China. This virus spreads mainly by person-to-person contact and here are ways on how you stay safe and protect yourself against Corona Virus.

This new type of coronavirus, cataloged as COVID-19, is a respiratory disease with ‘CO’ standing for corona and ‘VI standing for virus, and ‘D’ for disease.

This coronavirus spreads mainly when airborne particles resulting from coughing or sneezing. Coronaviruses can also live on surfaces for up to nine days, and cause an infection resulting from coming into contact with a contaminated surface, and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth. Protecting yourself against germs is your best line of defense, “If something looks dirty, it probably is dirty. Clean it, wipe it before you touch it.”

Wash Your Hands

Handwashing with soap is one of the cheapest, most effective things you can do to protect yourself and others against coronavirus, as well as many other infectious diseases.

As part of their coronavirus response, UNICEF is also reminding the public of the best way to wash their hands properly:

  1. Wet hands with running water
  2. Apply enough soap to cover wet hands
  3. Scrub all surfaces of the hands – including back of hands, between fingers and under nails – for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with running water
  5. Dry hands with a clean cloth or single-use towel

Coughing into your elbow or arm is a good alternative to covering with your hands, as we usually go on to touch other things with our hands and could still be spreading germs.

The virus typically enters through the nose or the mouth, Simpson said. Therefore you should try to reduce how often you touch these areas unless it’s immediately after you washed your hands.

“Most of us unconsciously touch our nose and mouth multiple times in a day. It is difficult not to, but it is important,” Simpson said.

Medical practitioners also recommend eating foods rich in vitamin D (fortified milk, fatty fish, eggs), zinc (beans, nuts, and tofu), beta-carotene (sweet potatoes, spinach), vitamin E (almond butter and peanuts), as well as foods with adequate amounts of protein.
