“Yung L” Afro-dancehall artiste has been around for a really long time, alternating between bouts of relevance and undeserved obscurity, but never losing his distinct brilliance.
He scored his first major hit in 2014 with “SOS”, presenting himself as the next big thing, but never making good on that initial hype. While he hasn’t landed a single as big since then, that didn’t stop him from dropping his debut album under his new label, Chocolate City.
Aptly-titled Better Late Than Never, the 19-track album finds Yung L squarely in his element and at varying instances, we get to see glimpses of an artiste not only capable of stepping outside his genre box but destroying said box altogether.
While the album’s introductory songs – “Nina”, “Superman” and “Suzzy – find Yung L leaning on the genre he does best, as the album progresses – occasionally interrupted by unpleasant skits – we hear other tracks like “Anya” “Gbewa” and “Pressure” which showcase his stellar range.
The album is also helped along by a bunch of exceptional features, including Mr Marley (shining bright on “Superman”), R2Bess, Sarkodie and Mavin Records’ Poe, who is frustratingly wasted on a skit – although he still manages to be wonderful on it.
Overall, the album is spectacular, with a lot of tracks that could very well be Yung L’s next “SOS”. If 19 tracks are too much to weed through and you’re looking for songs that’ll give you an overall feel of the album, you should start off with “One Shot”, “Buru Halleluyah” and “Superman”.
Listen and enjoy
