Melodownz shares his double EP titled Melo & Blues.

The songs that have been on high rotation in his car lately come from Melo & Blues, his new double EP which is out today. The West Auckland musician has a long history with Red Bull Music Studios Auckland. He dropped a memorable verse for 64 Bars back in Season 4 and he got back into the studio earlier this year to record the High Beams mini album with Raiza Biza and Illbaz.

Melo & Blues, which came together over the past year and a half, was also recorded in part at Red Bull Music Studios Auckland.

The record is about presenting the two sides of himself to the world, from the album title, which signifies the varied styles of music he’s exploring, to the first single ‘Peace $igns Gang $igns’, which is a metaphor for good and bad.

Between opening for Compton rapper YG earlier this week and celebrating the release of Melo & Blues, Melodownz took some time out to sit down and explain some of the thinking behind his new music. On the Melo side, I’ve got the more traditional Melodownz sound and the second half is more experimental.

I was listening back to ‘Prototype’ from Andre 3000 and some of Kendrick’s work. They’re so contemporary with the style. It’s still hip-hop, but they switch up the tone of their voices and put little effects on them. I was like ‘I don’t want to sound like that but I want to do something similar that’s personalised with my style’.
