The 2020 XXL Freshman Class listed Polo G, Jack Harlow, Lil Keed, NLE Choppa, Rod Wave, Calboy, Mulatto, Chika, Fivio Foreign, Lil Tjay, Baby Keem, and 24kGoldn.

XXL decided that this year would be different, bringing twelve artists to the core of the Freshman Class. Dropping the new “Believe The Future” edition of the magazine, the 2020 XXL Freshman Class was shown off with their new cover, including Polo G from Chicago, Fivio Foreign from Brooklyn, Lil Keed from Atlanta, NLE Choppa from Memphis, Rod Wave from Florida, Jack Harlow from Louisville, Chika from Alabama, Mulatto from Atlanta, Lil Tjay from The Bronx, Baby Keem from California, Calboy from Chicago, and 24kGoldn from California.

Pop Smoke fans couldn’t believe that the late rapper wasn’t included, but according to XXL, they did offer him a spot. “One of the bittersweet memories of the 2020 Freshman process was meeting with Pop Smoke a month before his tragic death,” the outlet wrote in their article. “Pop was chosen as the first Freshman in the class, to which he happily accepted.”

XXL suggested that it wasn’t necessarily their fault that Pop Smoke didn’t join this year’s Freshman. “Circumstances out of our control prevented us from including Pop as part of the cover posthumously, but to us, he is still part of the class,” they continued.
