Dave Chappelle drops a new special on Netflix’s YouTube channel. The title of 8:46 refers to both the time of Chappelle’s birth and the amount of time the Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck.
The killing, and footage of the killing, are the subject of the set, along with the protests that sprung up in its wake.
“This kid thought he was going to die, he knew he was going to die,” Chappelle said, speaking about Floyd. “When I watched that tape, I understood this man knew he was going to die.”
Chappelle goes on to say:
“What are you signifying that you can kneel on a man’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds and feel like you wouldn’t get the wrath of God?” he asked. “That’s what is happening right now. It’s not for a single cop, it’s for all of it.”
He also addresses responses in the media, criticising Fox News pundit Laura Ingham and the conservative commentator Candace Owens.
