Starz cut ties with 50 Cent After He Mocked Terry Crews’ Sexual Assault Testimony
After 50 Cent mocked Terry Crews on social media for his sexual assault testimony in front of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, a Care2 petition was started asking Starz to cut ties with the rapper and producer for the premium channel’s most-watched series, Power.
The rap mogul posted a since-deleted meme on his Instagram ridiculing Crews, with images of the NFL player-turned-actor’s buff body with the words “I got raped. My wife just watched” next to it and another image below of Crews with a rose in his mouth saying “Gym time.”
50 Cent addressed the controversy on Twitter after deleting the Instagram in question, writing, “People are so sensitive.”
The Care2 petition detailed the issue in its description, noting that the “Candy Shop” rapper’s social media posts degraded Crews as a man because he was a sexual harassment survivor. “His words were not only disappointing but also indicative of what the #MeToo movement is fighting against.”
The petition is aimed at Starz, which extended its business relationship with 50 Cent to September 2019, as he is set to produce three more shows for the channel. “50 Cent has sent a message loud and clear that he is not a fan of the #MeToo movement…. Starz should send a message to the rapper and to all other potential producers and filmmakers that they will not tolerate this type of ignorance.”
As of press time, the petition had garnered more than 5,000 signatures and is seeking 10,000 total.
In his testimony on Tuesday, Crews talked about his experience with speaking out about sexual harassment, after alleging that he was groped by WME agent Adam Venit. “This past year, we have seen powerful men in Hollywood and elsewhere finally held accountable for sexual harassment and assault,” Crews said. “I wanted these survivors to know that I believed them. I supported them and this happened to me too.”
