Joyner Lucas’ 508-507-2209 will no doubt be overshadowed by some of the A-list albums that dropped today, it remains a dope project in its own right. Lucas has some serious skills on the mic, with a focused delivery that’s refreshing in the age of autotune. The album features many solid cuts, but “I Need More” stood out as an immediate standout.
Lyrically, it harkens back to Hopsin’s “Ill Mind 5,” in which Lucas goes in on an imagined person, picking their materialistic mindset apart without mercy. There’s no telling whether or not he had anybody in mind, but perhaps it’s the current hip-hop climate that has him stressing.
