The New Mutants Director Reveals Deadpool And X-Men References Were Cut.
The New Mutants hasn’t had much luck on its journey to release, with a series of delays and last-minute re-shoots but they’re not the movie’s only hiccups.
Ahead of New Mutants’ release next week, director Josh Boone has revealed that the latest X-Men title was originally written as the first in a trilogy, whereas now it’s expected to be the Mutants’ first and last big-screen outing.
This means that several moments featuring classic X-Men characters were cut, with the team hoping they’d have the time and the space to bring them in later across two sequels.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Boone explained that although “there still are references to the X-Men universe” in The New Mutants, they’re not going to serve fans in quite the same way.
In a reference to Disney’s buy-out of Fox’s entertainment assets, Boone added: “It’s just like we made this at such a strange time, [as] in the circumstances under which we made it were strange… We didn’t know there was gonna be a merger till we finished shooting.
“So we made the movie thinking it was the first of three, and then eventually we [would] dovetail with [Simon Kinberg’s] X-Men movies. Eventually they’d come together like in a big Marvel type way. But you know, that’s not what happened.”
The New Mutants were also initially hoping to come together with some of the characters from Deadpool, Boone revealed, sharing plans for a Colossus cameo.
With Anna Taylor-Joy playing Illyana Rasputin (Magik) in her first big screen debut, the X-Men filmmaker recognised the opportunity for her brother Piotr (Colossus) to show up.
“We definitely wrote [a scene] where Illyana was in like a field in Russia that was being tilled,” he said. “And suddenly her brother comes in and you see all the armour come on him and stop the thing from running her over.”
