Marcelo got into the Athletic Bilbao box and Dani Garcia tried to shield the ball, but he ended up stepping on the Brazilian.
Real Madrid asked for a penalty and the VAR called the referee over to the monitor. The images showed that Dani Garcia clearly stepped on Marcelo inside the box.
The on field official gave Real Madrid a penalty and Sergio Ramos beat Unai Simon from the spot to make it 0-1. Just a few minutes later, there was another controversial incident, but this time in the Real Madrid box. Ramos stepped on Raul Garcia in the area, the referee did not give it and the VAR did not call for an on field review.
Ramos was walking backwards, did not see the Athletic Bilbao man and accidentally stepped on Garcia. The incident also occurred well away from the ball and all of this could explain why the penalty was not given.
