The project was Inspired by her divorce from ex-husband Simon Konecki, Adele tackles the separation on the album, whilst discussing her motherhood and the scrutiny of fame.
The album was announced with a lengthy note from Adele, who has gotten married and divorced from Simon Konecki since the release of her blockbuster 25 album, which set the record for best single-week album sales ever since Nielsen (now MRC Data) starting tracking point-of-sales music in 1991. It moved 3.38 million copies in its debut week.
“I was certainly nowhere near where I’d hoped to be when I first started it 3 years ago. Quite the opposite actually. I rely on routine and consistency to feel safe, I always have. And yet there I was knowingly — willingly even, throwing myself into a maze of absolute mess and inner turmoil!” Adele writes in a note accompanying the release date announce. “I’ve learned a lot of blistering truths about myself along the way.
I’ve shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones.” According to Adele, “I’ve finally found my feeling again. I’d go as far as to say that I’ve never felt more peaceful in my life.”
Adele goes on to liken the album to an irreplaceable friend, a “ride or die throughout the most turbulent period of my life.” She concludes by saying, “I’ve painstakingly rebuilt my house and my heart since then and this album narrates it. Home is where the heart is.
There were moments when I was writing these songs, and even when I was mixing them and stuff like that, where I was like, ‘Maybe I don’t need to put this album out,’” she tells Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
“Like, ‘Maybe I should write another.’ Just because music is my therapy. I’m never going into the studio to be like, ‘Right, I need another hit.’ It’s not like that for me. When something is more powerful and overwhelming [to] me, I like to go to a studio, because it’s normally a basement and there’s no fucking windows and no reception, so no one can get ahold of me. So I’m basically running away. And no one would’ve known I’d written that record. Maybe I just had to get it out of my system.”
