Jose Mourinho has disagreed with the decision to modify the offside laws in the Premier League midway through the season.
Officials in the top-flight were issued with updated guidance, following Bernardo Silva’s contentious goal scored in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Silva scored after teammate Rodri ran back from an offside position to tackle Villa defender Tyrone Mings, with Rodri deemed to not be offside as Mings had taken possession from a City pass and thereby ‘deliberately playing the ball’, per the rules.
However, the laws of the game have now been changed and such a goal would be disallowed if it was to occur again.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken in support of the change, questioning why it had not come into place earlier.
Speaking ahead of Thursday night’s clash with Spurs, he said: “Aston Villa will be really happy with [the offside law tweak]. My first thought was how can we not think about this before? Lovren against Spurs, Kane scored (sic). Not the first time it’s happened.
“Finally, I would say, we have changed this rule. All football people agreed it needed solving. I am really happy they have changed it.”

Mourinho disagrees though as, although he admits the change in the rules is correct, he believes it is unfair to tweak things midway through a season.
“Not happy with. I believe that now is right and previously not right but I don’t think it is fair you change the rule in the season.”
Both Spurs and Liverpool will be hoping that the topic of controversial offsides is not raised again following tomorrow night’s match.
