Judi Dench Hopes Her New Movie Will Help Viewers Forget Their Worries

Judi Dench has said that she hopes her new movie ‘Blithe Spirit’ will help viewers forget about the things that they worry about.

The 86-year-old Oscar-winning actress, who plays eccentric medium Madame Arcati in the adaptation of Noel Coward’s comedy, said she wants the upcoming film to provide viewers with some light relief in a time of uncertainty, referring to the UK leaving the European Union.

“I hope audiences will have a lovely time and have a laugh and be transported for a bit so that they can forget the things they’re worried about, like Brexit,” she said.

Directed by Edward Hall and also starring Isla Fisher, Dan Stevens and Leslie Mann, Dench admits she had a great time playing the “dream” role.

“Being asked to play Madame Arcati is kind of a dream come true. In our adaptation, she doesn’t just come in for a couple of scenes – she goes on a bit and causes even more chaos, but subsequently has a really wonderful part to play,” she said in an interview recorded by the filmmakers.

The play outing of Blithe Spirit first appeared on Broadway at the Booth Theatre in 1941 and has since been revived three times, most recently in 2009 when Angela Lansbury earned a Tony Award for her performance as Madame Arcati.
