Top 10 biggest summer transfer overspends including Liverpool and Chelsea moves

Premier League spending went over £1bn once again as clubs splashed huge amounts for players in their quest for silverware, but which sides spent too much on players they shouldn’t have?

The Premier League saw more big bids and crazy transfers over the summer as an extended window allowed for plenty of business to be done.

Chelsea were the top flight’s biggest spenders, splashing no less than £226.1million on fresh talent from across Europe.

They are, rather unsurprisingly, followed by Manchester City in the second, who spent big on a few players.

Aston Villa and Leeds were also up there, as were Wolves who continue to identify the best Portuguese talent available.

But who failed to get themselves a good deal in the transfer market?

Well, transfermarkt and Bettingodds have crunched the numbers, and thrown up some surprise names.

So here’s the top 10 biggest summer transfer overspends of the Premier League window…

Ruben Dias to Manchester City – Cost £61.2m (£29.7m over value of player)

A commanding centre-back was exactly what City needed, now the Sky Blues will just be hoping Dias can live up to his hefty price tag.

Fábio Silva to Wolves – Cost £36m (£25.2m over value of player)

Perhaps bought more for his huge potential – Silva has already turned out twice for Wolves in the Premier League, hinting that he could be ready to play a big part already.

Wesley Fofana to Leicester City – Cost £31.5m (£22.5m over value of player)

Another teenage dream, Fofana has barely had a full season in senior football, but the Foxes must regard him highly to cough up the big bucks.

Rhian Brewster to Sheffield United – Cost £23.4m (£18.5m over value of player)

Brewster was dwindling at Liverpool, and fair play to him for taking the leap to join the Blades. Could turn out to be a great addition.

Ollie Watkins to Aston Villa – Cost £27.7m (£16.9m over value of player)

It could almost be argued Watkins has justified his price tag after netting a hat-trick against champions Liverpool. The former Brentford man had been lighting up the second tier for a while.

Nathan Aké to Manchester City – Cost £40.8m (£15.6m over value of player)

The second new City centre-back on this list, Ake is a seasoned Premier League defender now, and should come good in Manchester.

Edouard Mendy to Chelsea – Cost £21.6m (£15.3m over value of player)

If he solves Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes, he could be worth five times his value. Looking solid so far, putting the £71m bid for Kepa Arrizabalaga to shame.

Diogo Jota to Liverpool – Cost £40.2m (£15m over value of player)

A key man for Wolves on their charge to European football, Jota appears to be settling in well at Anfield. Doesn’t seem that overpriced really, does it?

Ben Godfrey to Everton – Cost £24.8m (£10.4m over value of player)

Godfrey couldn’t save Norwich from relegation last season, but he is expected to be a future England centre-back. Watch this space!

Matty Cash to Aston Villa – Cost £14.2m (£9.9m over value of player)

Probably the best right-back in the Championship, Cash was always going to cost a premium due to his nationality.
