Jamie Redknapp Slammed Man Utd transfer decision over Chris Smalling

Jamie Redknapp has slammed Manchester United for their decision to let Chris Smalling leave on a permanent basis.

Manchester United had a busy transfer deadline day after a relatively slow summer with the likes of Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani joining while Chris Smalling left

The Sky Sports pundit went on to state that the England international is better than current options Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.

United have had a rollercoaster of a transfer window after months went by with just Donny van de Beek signed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hellbent on landing Jadon Sancho but the Red Devils have looked perilous at the back.

They went into deadline day determined to sign players, with Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani top targets.

A move for Sancho had fallen through with Borussia Dortmund not willing to negotiate.

But one outgoing caused a stir when Smalling left for Roma on a permanent basis, following on from his successful spell there last year.

And Redknapp could not understand why the ex-Fulham star was allowed to leave considering the problems United have had at the back.

It was only Sunday when Tottenham turned up to Old Trafford and scored 6 in their worst home defeat since 2013.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: “If you looked at Manchester United on Sunday, you could be getting a player in for every position.

“Not one of those players did anything or showed anything that they want to be a Manchester United player.

“The players he has have got to do so much better.

“The interesting thing for me, they’re letting Chris Smalling go to Roma.

“I’ve watched Bailly and Lindelof, he’s gone to Italy and been successful there – I’m thinking he’s better than what they’ve got.”

It followed comments made by Patrice Evra, who was shocked by his former club’s performance against Spurs.

The Frenchman took aim at Harry Maguire, who made a number of errors – including a catastrophic start when he yanked Luke Shaw down to the ground, allowing Tanguy Ndombele to score.

He said on Sunday: “I know you have to have some filter when you talk on TV but it is a shambles.

“Gary Neville I heard him say captain Harry Maguire needs a holiday. We always hear about pairing him with someone. But what about taking him out of the squad?

“I don’t want to start to criticise players. I am someone who’s been there. I make many comments about the board but tonight no one has any excuse.

“They let down all the United fans. I don’t care about the result because I have been beaten 6-1.

“But it’s just about every year it’s the same story. Right now I feel all the United fans.
