Harry Maguire accused of lying as Mykonos police insist he was treated 'like any drunk Brit'

Harry Maguire Was accused of lying as Mykonos police said he was treated ‘like any drunk Brit’.

A Greek police officer who was involved in the arrest of Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire in Mykonos earlier this month has insisted he was not treated any differently because of his status.

Maguire received a suspended jail sentence last week after being found guilty of assaulting police and attempted bribery.

The verdict was nullified when his lawyers submitted an appeal, and the case now looks set to go to a retrial.

Maguire has claimed he did not realise the officers, who were wearing plain clothes, were police, and was worried he was being abducted.

The England international has also continued to argue that the brawl started when his sister, Daisy, was injected with a drug by two Albanian men.

But speaking to The Sun, one of the officers said: “There was no mention of Albanians and nothing about his sister.

“That issue was never raised. We didn’t treat him differently to other drunk British guys.”

On Maguire’s claims, he added: “Every time he opens his mouth, he lies. This was just a drunk guy getting in a fight. We deal with it a lot.

“But it has turned into something else with everything he says. Why would eight police surround him and not identify themselves? We’d lose our jobs.”

The lawyer responsible for prosecuting Maguire, Dr Ioannis Paradissis, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Monday morning and stated his belief that the player is exaggerating claims that he feared for his life at one stage.

“I doubt he feared for his life,” he said. “The police heard some kind of commotion, and they just went there to break the argument.

“The eyewitnesses say that the police immediately said ‘we are from the police’ and showed them their professional ID, so I doubt there could have been any misunderstanding.”
