The rap queens recently celebrated their big score as the track broke records and Herby wants in on that action. “WAP” begins its time on the Billboard charts with 125,000 pure sales, a huge sum for this day and age when so many have abandoned iTunes and the like.
“WAP” earned the largest sales week for a song since Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie’s “Me!,” the lead single from the pop star’s then-forthcoming album Lover, opened at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart (but not the Hot 100) with an astounding 193,000 sales.
Cardi’s label was a bit tentative when it came to releasing the track. The 27-year-old rapper has admitted WAP ‘scared’ her label Atlantic Record, and that she had to fight to keep it. Speaking on Ash London Live in Australia, Cardi – real name Belcalis Almanzar – said: ‘I told my label that I was ready to put out a song’, but only let them listen to WAP after she had already asked for money for the video.
She explained: ‘When they heard the song they were like, “We really like it, but that song is so explicit.” And I guess they were asking around. Even with YouTube we couldn’t use the explicit version. We had to use “wet and gushy” [to keep] PG-13. ‘My label was really scared to put that record [out]. They were like, “Can you please get another record and you could put Megan on it?” And I was like, “No”.’
The video for the song has caused almost as much controversy as the lyrics, with people calling for the removal of Kylie Jenner from the clip and Carole Baskin hitting out at the rappers for using big cats for the video.
