Having won the trophy on each of his first three attempts at the Madrid helm, Zinedine Zidane finally found himself on the wrong side of a European knock-out clash as City’s 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium sent them through to the last four with a 4-2 aggregate triumph.

Madrid arrived as newly-crowned champions of La Liga, transformed by Zidane since their first leg defeat in February and believing they could perform one of their historic comebacks of the past, but those all came at the Bernabeu. In their 118-year history, for all their many medals and mythologies, they had only overturned a home first-leg defeat in the 1970-71 Cup Winners’ Cup against Wacker Innsbruck.

With the English side leading 2-1 after the first leg at the Bernabeu, Jesus twice forced Real centre-half Raphael Varane into errors as City claimed another 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium to progress 4-2 on aggregate.

Karim Benzema struck in the first half to cancel out Raheem Sterling’s early opener, before Gabriel Jesus struck in the second half to put the tie beyond doubt.

Sterling, who scored his 100th goal for Manchester City and his fifth of their Champions League campaign, believes his team’s work-rate was the main reason behind their victory in the tie.

“Energy, passion. It is a competition we want to do well in. If we play our football and run our socks off then the result will come,” Sterling said to BT Sport.

Pep Guardiola said he picked his Manchester City side to face Real Madrid with a fast start in mind and a fast start is exactly what he got.

City are used to them at the Etihad in big knockout ties – they scored in the second minute against Liverpool in 2018 and the fourth against Tottenham in 2019 – but where they are used to needing to get back into games here the goal secured their control of the tie.
