Juventus vs Lyon (2-1) Champions league goals and highlights

Juventus win at home against Lyon was not enough to prevent them from going out of the Champions League in rearranged second-leg match on Friday.

The French team progressed to the quarterfinals on away goals after a 2-2 draw on aggregate. Lyon will now face Manchester City in the single-elimination quarterfinals in Lisbon after the English team beat Real Madrid 2-1 on the night to progress 4-2 on aggregate.

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo broke the club record for most goals in a single season on Friday with his double against Lyon in the Champions League.

The Bianconeri went into the clash needing a positive result to advance to the quarter-finals, having gone down 1-0 in the last-16 opener all the way back in February.

Though Ronaldo scored a pair of goals to reach 37 on the season, Juventus crashed out of the Champions League after defeating Lyon 2-1 on the night and falling on away goals in a 2-2 aggregate result.

Maurizio Sarri was handcuffed by some pretty significant injuries, chief among them Paulo Dybala, who had pulled up 12 days before with a thigh injury and wasn’t fit enough to start, though he did make the bench. Also missing with an injury from the same game was Douglas Costa, who could have made a huge difference against a packed-in defense.

With those issues, Sarri sent out the best team he could. Wojciech Szczesny started in goal, with Juan Cuadrado, Matthijs de Ligt, Leonardo Bonucci, and Alex Sandro screening in front of him. Bentancur joined Miralem Pjanic, who as it turned out would be playing his last game for Juventus, and Adrien Rabiot in midfield.

For Rudi Garcia’s side, Anthony Lopes was the man between the sticks, with Jason Denayer, Marcelo (no relation to the Real Madrid one) and Marcal forming the back three in front of him. Leo Dubois and Maxwel Cornet were the wing-backs, bookending Aouar, Bruno Guimaraes, and 20-year-old Maxence Caqueret. Depay joined Karl Toko Ekambi in the strike pair up top.

Two penalties in the first half were dispatched superbly, but should they have been awarded at all? Rodrigo Bentancur’s slide tackle clearly won the ball, while Depay’s handball blocking Miralem Pjanic seemed innocuous.
