At the time, Bowie and his band were in rehearsals for his massive 50th Birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden. In advance of the concert, Bowie recorded a selection of his favorite compositions during the rehearsals for a special on the BBC.

The cover art for the album will features a portrait of David by renowned photographer Albert Watson, taken in New York in 1996.
