Taylor Swift releases a new song titled Only The Young. The new track available for download and streaming, is from the newly released documentary Miss Americana, on Netflix. The single didn’t appear on her most recent album, Lover, but Swift gave fans a preview of the song in the documentary and shared her thoughts behind the dark, disturbing, politically-minded track.

“The first verse, I want to be all about hearing, you know, if you were a kid and you really loved Beto [O’Rourke] and thought that was the future of Texas. Or you thought Stacey Abrams [who ran for governor in Georgia] was going to win and you were going door to door trying to make it happen and she still gets beat. And it just didn’t happen,” she tells producer Joel Little in the doc. “But it’s like, statistically, we have what 3 to 4 million people turning 18 before the next [election]? It’s basically saying don’t lose hope.”

“It was hard to see so many people feel like they had canvassed and done everything and tried so hard,” she said. “I saw a lot of young people’s hopes dashed.” The singer shared that it was “tragic” to witness people who have been a victim of the effects of gun violence, war, climate change, etc.

Swift and co-producer and co-writer Joel Little created the song while in New York City after they finished creating “ME!” and “The Man” from Swift’s seventh studio album, Lover. The song features backing vocals from Little’s two daughters, who had no idea that they were recording the chorus for Swift’s song.

Miss Americana (also known as Taylor Swift: Miss Americana) is a documentary film, directed by Lana Wilson, that follows American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and her life over the course of several years of her career. It was released on Netflix and in select theaters on January 31, 2020.
