Grimes & i_o have released a new song titled Violence. Available for download and streaming, the new track dropped alongside the music video. In the clip, we see Grimes can be seen reading The Art of War, a book that foreshadows the video to come. The singer performs choreographed dance moves on a stage with a Greek-themed backdrop alongside a group of female dancers.
“Violence” follows Grimes’ comeback single “We Appreciate Power,” as well as the demo for the song “Pretty Dark.” Grimes has said that her new album Miss_Anthrop0cene, the follow-up to her 2015 record Art Angels, is due out later this year.
In an interview with Beats 1, Grimes talked said that she “finished my album a long time ago” and that she “started working on my new album, which is techno pop.” She continued on talking about working with the DJ on the song:
I hit IO up and we made this song up in an hour. And then I was just like, “This must go on the album because it just feels good.” And, you know what, you know what? It’s just fresh. We just made this song a few months ago and I just needed to have something which felt fresh. It just felt… You know when you write a song so fast, it just feels perfect. It was like one of those. So I was like, “Let’s just throw it on.” I want to shoot a music video for something that I haven’t listened to a thousand times.
Grimes released the single “We Appreciate Power” last November, and has collaborated with Bring Me the Horizon and Poppy on recent tracks “Nihilist Blues” and “Play Destroy.” She co-wrote and was featured on the Janelle Monáe song, “Pynk,” from last year’s Dirty Computer.
