H.E.R. came through with a surprise song during her performance with band at the just concluded VMAs. She perform her unreleased single, “Anti.” The mellow ballad takes aim at society’s obsession with keeping up with the social media illusion and highlights the extreme measures people go through to gain acceptance from total strangers.

“Society is killing me softly,” she mused while being lifted above the stage. It was a moving performance for the singer’s VMAs debut.

Her backup singers joined her on stage and some were wearing t-shirts that supported the song’s message as their garments read “anti-bullying,” “anti-racism,” “anti-sexism” and “anti-brutality.” H.E.R. also stepped up to conclude the song on the electric guitar.

H.E.R. dropped a single called “21” along with a music video that featured footage from her 21st birthday party and from her life on the road as a touring artist. She also released “Racks” featuring YBN Cordae in June.
