Calva Louise releases brand new album titled “Rhinoceros.” Rhinoceros the debut album from Calva Louise, features the singles Outrageous and I Heard A Cry. One part Venezuelan, one part Māori and another part English, Calva Louise come from London via France. The grunge trio made up of Jess Allanic on guitar and vocals, Alizon Taho on bass and vocals, and Ben Parker on drums and vocals. Produced by Margo Broom (Fat White Family, Goat Girl).

Flourishing within London’s thriving punk scene since their formative days, the band’s (one part Venezuelan, one part Maori and another part English) tenacious live reputation has already earned them tour supports alongside Spring King and Anteros, in addition to Albert Hammond Jr and an upcoming UK tour with The Blinders.

Discussing their upcoming full-length release, the three-piece stated: “Our debut album is called Rhinoceros, in reference to a particular aspect of the work of Eugene Ionesco. In the lyrics of these ten songs we show our perception as young people, partly foreigners, who try to fit in and belong to something and somewhere in this globalized world. However, we have realised that our greatest motivation is the challenge of adventure, of penetrating into the unknown, and being authentic allows us to feel free to follow our own path, without ceasing to belong to this world, which is the reality”.

I Heard A Cry’ opens the album with a blistering punk bass beat, overlaid with fuzz guitar, somewhat reminiscent of Ash or Smashing Pumpkins. But cutting through this are Allanic’s vocals, and they take the song somewhere entirely different and altogether more interesting, reminding me of Cerys Matthews in her time with Catatonia, and Clare Grogan of 80’s guitar popsters Altered Images.
