The news of Vince Staples’ imminent album release was a joy to behold when it came to pass last week. Since then we’ve learned a lot about his FM project: the cover art, the tracklist, and the key contributors. The first record to scratch the surface from the bunch is a collaboration with Jay Rock entitled “Don’t Get Chipped.”
On “Don’t Get Chipped,” Kenny Beats undermines Vince Staples’ orthodox sound in compliance with something a little more luminescent, perhaps less vigorous. It’s all part of a process in which Vince Staples and Jay Rock expand on the perceived boundaries of their artistry.
Kenny Beats made a name for himself in 2018 by aligning himself with Key! on an unheralded project. He followed that up with a host spot contributions with the likes of NBA Youngboy, Rico Nasty, 03 Greedo, Freddie Gibbs, and Hoodrich Pablo Juan. The transition back to conventional rap has been a smooth one for the Canadian producer. Here’s to hoping the rest of FM stacks up!
