In many ways, Joji is reimagining what it means to be an R&B singer. On his debut album, he explores new territory as we’re used to a sing-rap style from the 88Rising member. He’s transitioned into a full-blown singer on BALLADS 1, which released today. The album sees appearances from Clams Casino, Shlohmo, and more as a focus is put on the gloomy production and overall melancholy sound that Joji is pushing. A few of the tracks that were released prior to the full project were extremely interesting, giving way for many new fans to check out the album today. Songs like “SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK” are true highlights on BALLADS 1. With Trippie Redd prepping his upcoming mixtape A Love Letter To You 3, “R.I.P.” is definitely more of a display for him than it is for Joji.
Trippie gets the majority of space on the smooth song as Joji handles chorus duties. Canton rapper Trippie Redd has fluctuated this year in terms of his popularity but his talent is unprecedented as he continues to prove his versatility. On “R.I.P.” the two get pretty deep as they state they “would die for you,” getting into sensitive territory, which we’ve become accustomed to from both artists.
