The rapper reveals that the impact his joint tracks with Pharrell made might be a reason for the producer to shy away from collaborating with him again in the future.
“I don’t know if Pharrell will work with me again because those songs didn’t do what they were supposed to do. The label didn’t do the right thing.”
The meaning of “right thing” isn’t clarified past his comment. The songs mentioned are “Frequency” and “Surfin’.” Both songs were picked as promotional singles for the project which peaked at the 11th position on the US Billboard chart. The individual tracks themselves failed to chart, however.
Both Pharrell-featured songs received visual treatments with music videos directed by Kid Cudi himself. The clips and the songs themselves were generally well-received in the critical sense for offering originality within an authentic expression.
Kid Cudi opened up about his music and his life in a new interview with GQ. Amongst many interesting facets of his experience in the music industry was his 2016 studio album entitled Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’. The project was one of great meaning, being the first release to follow his admission of struggling with mental health issues such as depression. In this way, the record was a kind of triumph regardless of commercial success while it still has some disappointment attached to it.
