The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has slammed a N100,000 fine on a media station in Jos, Plateau state, after it accused the radio station of airing Nigerian songs which it said contains “vulgar and indecent music lyrics”.

In a letter addressed to JODAJ Global Communications Ltd, the NBC stated that the media station should pay the fine of N100,000 according to section 14.1.4.1a. While the songs listed are Falz “This is Nigeria”, Olamide “See Mary, See Jesus” and Wande Coal’s “Iskaba,” the offensive lyrics are as follows:

Falz- This is Nigeria– This is Nigeria, look how we living now, everybody be criminal
Wande Coal- Iskaba– Girl you dey make me kolo, shaking the ass like kolo
Olamide- See Mary, See Jesus– Casual use of the names of “Mary” and “Jesus“

Meanwhile, the NBC has urged broadcasters to abide by its Code and Guidelines on Political Broadcasts while reporting political activities.

The Head, Public Affairs of NBC, Mrs Maimuna Jimada, in a statement today, said the Director-General of the commission, Malam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, gave the advice on Wednesday at the sensitisation workshop on political broadcasts held in Osogbo, Osun.

Kawu was quoted as saying that the Nigerian broadcasters had responsibilities to work strictly according to the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

His words: “When we walk the straight and narrow path of adherence to our Code, we would assist the process of democracy consolidation in our country.

“ As you’re all aware, in a few weeks from now, the people of this state will be going to the polls to elect a new governor and other representatives.

“ It is the tradition of the NBC to organise sensitisation workshops wherever an election is to be held in Nigeria.

“ Broadcasters have basic responsibilities to our country, as defined by the terms of their licensing, as well as the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and the Guidelines on Political Broadcasts.“
