Over hazy percussion and a syrupy bassline, Suspect takes the lead with his swaggering hook—“wrong way down the one way.” His verse shows a real knack for balancing club-ready choruses with vivid lyrical detail, transforming the one-way street image into a metaphor for his rough London youth, and his hope for something better.
Skepta, who also built his career on sharp one-liners and street narratives, preaches the value of treading your own path: “Dad told me not to get two earrings/Man I’m so hard of hearing.” His silky smooth delivery and witty turns of phrase mesh with Suspect’s scrappy energy as he steps into his role as de facto mentor to the younger MC. Solomon, meanwhile, finds himself lost in the Suspect-Skepta sandwich, admitting as much in his verse (“I’m in the background, blending in”). Still, “One Way” makes clear that Suspect isn’t ready to rest on his laurels.
