Logic, Alessia Cara and five-time nominee Khalid got on stage at the Grammy night (Jan. 28), performing their suicide-awareness track “1-800-273-8255,” named after the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

As spotlights shone down on a smaller stage within the crowd, Logic kicked off the performance solo, donning a black sweatshirt adorned with the track title’s phone number on the front and the words “You Are Not Alone” at the back. Soon, Cara appeared on the stage opposite, her own t-shirt bearing the phrase “GIVE US HOPE,” and was quickly followed by Khalid.

Dozens of suicide attempt survivors, along with friends and relatives of suicide victims, stood by onstage. Logic closed things off with an emotional speech that seemed to reference the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements: “Stand tall and crush all predators under the weight of your heart that is full of the love that they will never take away from you,” he shouted to a roaring crowd.

“Bring us your tired, your poor and any immigrant who seeks refuge,” he continued, telling the audience that “you are not shitholes” — a jab at President Donald Trump for his recent comments toward immigrants.

“Together we can build not just a better country, but a world that is destined to be united.”

The song has received wide acclaim upon its April 2017 release for bringing attention to mental health issues and urging troubled listeners to seek help.
