In some parts of the world, there exists ceremonies specifically designed to applaud and reward excellence in acting business/trade.
Such events brings recognition and secondly, encouragement to producers, directors and actors, to get better as their work is being appreciated and recognised in their own country/continent.
In the United States, they have the Academy Awards also known as ‘ The Oscar’s , one of the many ceremonies that already exists in their country with the same purpose.
In Nigeria, which holds the 3rd largest movie industry in the world, there is the ‘Africa Movie Academy Awards’ as one of the award ceremonies in the country that aims to celebrate brilliance in the industry.
Movies have been produced in Nigeria for a very long time, starting from home videos and as more creative filmmakers and directors made their way into the industry, better quality movies were produced, more productions were made, and stories were told in a better way, featuring new and experienced Nigerian actors.
With hard work and dedication, the industry eventually grew and expanded, gaining recognition.
The first edition of the annual ceremony was in 2005 and has well-received and attracted the majority of Nigerian actors as well as actors in other African countries and of African roots.
It is an event specifically organised to reward and celebrate achievement in the Nigerian/Africa film industry, celebrating both movies in their local languages and English.
Now for the 13th edition of AMAA, here are few details you should know.
AMAA will be hosting a Creative Entrepreneurs’ Workshop in Kigali on May 13, which will precede the nominations gala night on May 14, 2017, as part of activities for what has been described as: “Weekend Get Away to Kigali.”
The nomination gala night, where nominees into the 28 categories of the awards will be announced, It will be headlined by Nigerian musical artiste, KCEE, and other talents from Rwanda.
AMAA holding the nominations in Rwanda this year will promote tourism and bilateral relations/trade between Nigeria and Rwanda.
Meanwhile, AMAA, with the support of the Lagos State Government, the official host state for the 13th edition, will hold a Sponsors’ Night in Lagos on May 4, 2017 where former President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, is expected to deliver a keynote address where she will speak on the topic: “The Imperative of the Creative Economy for Africa’s Socio-Economic Development.
The sponsor’s night is designed to seek corporate support for the event holding in Lagos and the creative sector in Nigeria in general, especially the film industry.
Business leaders and top government officials are expected at the event.
The main award event is scheduled to hold in Lagos on June 18, 2017 and will attract delegates and nominees from over 50 African countries and from Europe, North America, United States and South America.
It will be recalled that the AMAA nomination night had previously held in Accra, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Banjul, Lilongwe, Ouagadougou and Los Angeles.
