Gorrilaz return with the release of their new video “Hallelujah Money.” Marking the group’s the first track released in six years, the song features Benjamin Clementine, an English multi-instrumentalist and 2015 Mercury Prize winner.
The video opens with Clementine standing in a golden elevator — purposefully reminiscent of the Trump Towers’ gaudiness — as he performs with compelling bass vocals and animated expression. He reads from a book, exacting the corrupt nature of worshiping money, fetishizing power, and even building walls. Behind Clementine plays reels of miscellaneous and off-putting footage from traditional African dancers to the La Candelaria brotherhood in Spain.
Gorillaz’s frontman 2D offers a reassuring sentiment in the midst of the video’s chaos and the impending inauguration of such a questionable President-elect: When the morning comes, we are still human.
Another bit of solace comes from the virtual bassist Murdoc. “In these dark times, we all need someone to look up to. Me. That’s why I’m giving you this new Gorillaz song, a lightning bolt of truth in a black night. You’re welcome.”
