FACEBOOK-SAM-SMITH_NO.LEGAL_Yesterday Sam Smith announced that he does, in fact, sing the next James Bond theme. The Spectre song, “Writing’s On the Wall,” isn’t to be mistaken for a Destiny’s Child cover. “I wanted to make the most classic, most timeless Bond song—and also try to make it an epic love song,” he says to BBC Radio 1.

Sam and frequent collaborator Jimmy Napes wrote “Writing’s On the Wall” in 20 minutes, after having dreamed of doing a Bond theme for forever. But Sam also recorded the theme in January, which meant that he had to keep mum for months.

“This has been a top secret mission of my own, trying to keep this a secret, but I hope I did a good enough job,” Sam says. He sure did. While he was an early favorite, Sam threw people off his trail by saying he heard Ellie Goulding did the theme instead.

“Writing’s On the Wall” is out September 25. You can either preorder it on CD and vinyl now or preorder it on iTunes. Hear Sam Smith talk his Spectre theme on BBC Radio 1 and see his Instagram announcement below
