Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has declared Friday, June 12, 2015 a public holiday.

The declaration was made on Thursday, June 11, via a statement released by the governor’s media aide, Habib Aruna.

The work-free day will serve to commemorate the annulled June 12, 1993 elections which were believed to have been won by the late Moshood Kashimawo (MKO) Abiola.

In the statement, Ambode said that the date marked a watershed in the annals of transparent, free and fair elections in the country.

He further urged residents of the state to spend the day in sober reflection and in remembrance of the martyrs of the June 12 election struggle in prayers for laying the foundation of the democracy which the nation is now enjoying
